Null Basilica
Null Basilica
Common aliases:
The Quiet Vault
The Black Chapel
Site 9-Gamma (Mars and Chendiurian Security Directive Initiative provisional black site)
Very secretly, a Lazarus Consortium black site
Location
Embedded into the inner wall of an abandoned asteroid habitat carved out during early Kuiper Belt expansion. The habitat officially collapsed after a radiation incident. In reality, only the outer shell failed.
The Basilica is unreachable by conventional docking. Access requires a manual EVA approach along a fractured trench that defeats automated navigation systems.
Purpose and Function
The Null Basilica serves as a combined:
• black-market negotiation hall
• high-value asset exchange site
• clandestine dueling venue (nonlethal and lethal)
• temporary storage for illegal technology
• arbitration space between criminal factions
It is neutral ground. Violence outside sanctioned contexts is punished immediately.
Overall Structure
The Basilica is carved directly into the asteroid’s interior and lined almost entirely with layered cryspoly variants. From the outside, it looks like a collapsed void with no obvious entrance.
Internally, the structure resembles a vast, stepped amphitheater wrapped around a central void.
The space feels wrong to Human perception. Depth cues are inconsistent. Sound behaves unpredictably.
Cryspoly Composition
The Basilica uses a layered cryspoly stack:
Outer shell
Glasshowl Impact Mesh, oriented outward
Purpose: catastrophic failure deterrent against breaching attempts
Primary walls
Nightwell Black panels
Purpose: light absorption, disorientation, psychological pressure
Structural ribs
Standard Martian structural cryspoly reinforced with carbon nanotube lattices
Purpose: load bearing, vibration damping
Observation galleries
Ghostpane Phase Skin panels
Purpose: selective visibility for observers, smugglers, and enforcers
Inner sanctum floor and ceiling
Bloomveil Living Panels
Purpose: slow self-healing, atmospheric regulation, oxygen recycling
Every surface is doing more than one job.
Interior Zones
The Descent
A spiraling ramp descending from the hidden entry point. Lighting is minimal. Footsteps echo irregularly. The walls absorb sound unevenly.
Visitors experience mild vertigo because of subtle curvature distortions in the cryspoly panels.
The Ring
A circular walkway suspended over the central void. This is where negotiations occur. Benches are grown directly from Bloomveil cryspoly and feel faintly warm.
No weapons above a certain mass are allowed here. Enforcement is automated and merciless.
The Pit
A retractable dueling platform can extend into the void. The platform surface is a transparent polarizing cryspoly that shifts opacity based on blood contact and movement speed.
Spectators observe from Ghostpane galleries that flicker in and out of visibility.
The Vault Cells
Small compartments embedded in the outer wall. Ghostpane and Sunleech Polar cryspoly line each cell, enabling isolated power generation and complete sensor isolation.
Used for holding data cores, weapons, equipment or people very briefly.
The Choir
A ring of vertical cryspoly fins suspended above the Pit. They resonate when struck by sound or movement, creating the Basilica’s signature low harmonic hum.
This feature is intentional. It unsettles newcomers and calms regulars.
Environmental Control
Atmosphere is maintained by:
• Bloomveil biofiltration
• Sunleech Polar energy scavenging
• backup fusion micro-cell hidden in a sealed rib
Temperature is cool and dry. Oxygen levels are slightly elevated to sharpen alertness.
Lighting is indirect, reflected from polarizing cryspoly surfaces rather than visible fixtures.
Security and Enforcement
There are no visible guards.
Security is handled by:
• embedded micro-drones disguised as structural nodes
• automated mass and energy scanners
• phase-locked doors that mechanical force cannot open
• Glasshowl fail-safes that turn breaches into kill zones
Violations of Basilica rules result in an immediate structural response. Floors retract. Walls shift. Air pressure changes.
They drop recovered bodies into the nearest fusion-powered disintegrator.
Ownership and Control
The Basilica is jointly owned by six anonymous entities believed to include:
- the Lazarus Consortium (very secretly, known only to a select few)
- Mars and Chendiurian SDI
- a Martian skunk-works procurement ghost
- a Kuiper Belt syndicate accountant collective
- a former BuCol logistics AI operating without authorization
No single group controls it outright. That balance keeps it neutral.
Cultural Reputation
Among a select few criminals, the Null Basilica is sacred ground.
Deals made at the Null Basilica are binding. Unknown mechanisms afterward punish relentlessly betrayal.
Among BuCol analysts, it is a nightmare. Technically, it does not exist, and analysts cannot scan it reliably, and it does not behave like a normal structure.
Narrative Hooks
• Lately Kane has spent considerable time here, it is where almost all of Adi's new augments and equipment came from
• A prototype CCN or comm unit may have passed through the Vault Cells
• A duel here would be remembered forever
• Adi would immediately recognize the materials but not the full design
• Asteria would be deeply uncomfortable inside
