Sund

A city edging a crack in the world

Sund, my city, my home... A beautiful prosper city, capital of the region, seat of a gods' listener... Now barely a quarter of it stood, clawing to the verge of a cliff, a fracture in the world, a fissure with no start, no end, nor the other side.

Sund is an old central city, capital of its region. It's important for the region's commerce and a set off power as well as home to one of the gods' listeners. Or... well, it was.

Now, barely more than a neighbourhood stands, at the verge of an endless fissure that consumed the rest of the city. And us, the survivors? Barely have anything else yet work to have a place to call home once more.

What was in our city?

Or city holds... held a variety of neighbourhoods. There was the royal palace, standing proud in the center of the city, surrounded by both the magical and religious 'hoods. North of them was the small noble 'hood, with the military and merchant ones next to it, which they ended up connecting to the old neighbourhood.

Now, barely more than the old neighbourhood still stands...

People are having a lot of... negative emotions. Many demand that the standing houses should be shared with who lost everything, some don't consider them secure, some says the house ain't worthy of them, and some don't want their house invaded by unknown people. Can't believe that people can still be so full of themselves or so selfish after such disaster struck us.

A small camp area with shared tents have been set up outside the walls. It's saddening seeing the walls that once made us feel so safe stand there, useless to their job, yet still standing proud.

Who lived here?

A lot of people from all species, we are... were proud of how multispecies and accessible we were. I don't really remember the numbers but we used to be hundreds of thousands of people, and now I doubt we even reach a thousand.

I believe big part of the city were farmers, hunters, and similar. The soldiers and mages were the second biggest group of people, probably followed by the merchants, and ending with the nobles being the smallest.

Our nobles aren't really dirty rich people, but families of all the princesses that ruled in the city. They don't have to work cuz they got a monthly pay, but most do work cuz the pay is for the basic needs only and don't let them save up a lot.

Mireda gave me this journal. Told me to write down my days, my thoughts, my problems, but most importantly, my happy moments, hopes, and what pushes me forwards.

I think it's stupid.

Writing down my days and feelings won't do nothing, nor will change the past nor help the present. But she's wise, so I'll humour her and write, yet not what she asked for, no.

I shall write about us, who are still alive, about our city, both the lost and the standing, and our attempts at getting back a home.

Eraia, the princess, the god's listener. She's been able to hear the whispers of gods since before she had memory. It was incredibly annoying as child she claims, but it got better after she learnt how to deal with it.

Since the fissure, she claims everything is quiet, silent. She's trying to look strong and proud, but I know her, and I can see how all the silence is slowly breaking her.

Our princess (I'm so glad she survived) is not really from a royalty family, that's not what royalty means for us. She's one of the few people in the world who is able to hear the gods and understand them. She rules over the city with one representative of each neighbourhood.

There was one time when we had two princesses at the same time, they ruled together. But most of the time, a new princess is born when the older one is approaching her death. That allows the older one to teach the younger one how to deal with her godly hearing.

The princess did some sort of census among the survivors? I think that's the word at least. Most are farmers, hunters and crafters, there's also a good group of soldiers and some mages. Few nobles and merchants survived. We should be able to rebuild if our fields are in a good enough state and the forest boons us with food.

No threats have been seen yet, so everyone is being shown how to help with food and construction. Once we have a fair camp, we'll be able to teach people how to defend themselves, and the mages also want to find people to train as well.

Our history

----- ... I We Our city

I can't. I can't bring myself to talk about the history of the city. I won't deny that I don't know a lot about it, but our city just... just got destroyed, what does our history matter anymore????

Our history will be whatever happens from now on, if we even manage to survive and rebuild.
