Marisa Lavin
Marisa Lavin's life is one of tragedy, a stark reminder of how quickly fortune can turn in Arbor. From the heights of wealth to the brink of ruin, she has weathered the collapse of her family’s legacy as best she can. Yet even the most resolute souls eventually crack. Perhaps it is only a matter of time before Arbor claims another victim, one more name added to the pile of corpses that capitalism inevitably demands.
"Wealth does not protect you from stupidity or another man's greed. It only makes you a larger target."
Appearance
Marisa takes after her father, with a Mediterranean complexion and dark, tightly curled hair. She is completly Human, though some whisper that her affinity for water hints at traces of Water Touched lineage.
Personality
Marisa is resolute and fiercely determined. She has endured repeated tragedy, and that endurance defines her. What remains of her family’s enterprise is driven forward with the same focus that governs her personal life. Every decision and every action is aimed at reclaiming the prestige and honour the Lavin name has lost.
That determination has begun to blur into obsession. Those closest to her have noticed a growing instability, a manic edge to her efforts and a refusal to stop no matter the cost. There is a sense that she is only one step away from crossing a line, from doing something truly monstrous. Or perhaps she already has.
Background
Marisa’s life is defined by expectation and the devastation that follows when those expectations collapse.
Early Life
Marisa was born into privilege. The Lavin family controlled much of Arbor’s waterways, operating gondolas and water taxis that moved people quickly and efficiently, far outperforming The Coachmen, whom they steadily drove out of business.
Raised as the future head of the family, Marisa was educated in the governance of the gondoliers and the importance of expansion through new canals. Her two fathers guided her carefully, but like many in power they failed to see the danger building beneath them.
Steam Arrives
The opening of Arbor’s third railway station marked the beginning of the end.
The Coachmen had already dissolved into The Checkers, and much of the Ferrymen’s remaining trade was seized by the rising The Black Hands. As tunnels spread and rail lines expanded, profits collapsed with alarming speed. What had once been an effortless system of licences and income began to erode within months.
The Toll of Progress
With work vanishing, anger followed.
Displaced ferrymen gathered at the Lavin holdings, demanding action. Marisa’s fathers had no answers. Day after day, tensions escalated. Workers had no livelihood and no future, leaving them with nothing but their anger.
Marisa was fourteen when one of her fathers was killed.
No one knows who fired the shot. Some blame a desperate worker, others suspect the Black Hands. The truth is lost. Soon after, her remaining father took his own life.
In a matter of weeks, Marisa inherited everything and stood completely alone.
A Spark of Defiance
Fourteen is no age to lead an organisation, least of all one in collapse, but the Lavin charter allowed no alternative.
With no resources, Marisa could not retain her family’s seat on The Silver Council, losing it to the Black Hands. Some whisper that this was the true motive behind her father’s death.
Marisa did not yield.
She reduced the number of licences in circulation, effectively laying off hundreds. Strangely, the riots that should have followed never came.
With a smaller and controlled workforce, she pivoted the business toward luxury and specialised services such as pleasure cruises, private transport, and discreet dealings. Against all expectations, the Ferrymen survived.
How she avoided the inevitable backlash remains a mystery.
Rumours
A Deal
In Arbor, sudden success invites suspicion.
Marisa’s reversal of fortune has led many to believe she struck some kind of bargain. Investigations have uncovered little, except for one detail.
Before her reforms, licences were numerous. Afterward, they were reduced to exactly 401.
The identity of the holder of the final licence remains unknown.
Information Broker
There are whispers that the Ferrymen’s true trade is no longer transport, but information.
It is said that anything spoken near the waters of Arbor has a way of reaching Marisa. Given how much of the city touches canals, there are few places truly beyond her reach.
Relationships
Marisa has received offers of courtship and alliance, but she has refused them all. Where once she might have entertained such prospects, she now sees them as distractions or liabilities.
She is not blind to mortality. She has borne two children. Their other parent, or parents, remain unknown, and the children themselves are hidden from the world. Their names and whereabouts are known only to a trusted few.
Allegiance
The Ferrymen, and the preservation of the Lavin name above all else.
Abilities
Indomitable Will
Marisa possesses exceptional mental resilience and cannot easily be broken or coerced.
Master of the Waterways
An expert navigator with an intimate knowledge of Arbor’s canals and currents.
Water Affinity
Marisa displays an unusual connection to water, whether through skill, superstition, or something more unnatural.
