Bristlewick Island

Bristlewick is a Halfling inhabited island in the Shattered Sea, north of Pirate Switzerland and southeast of the Tosscobble Confederacy. Unlike most Halflings of the Shattered Sea, the inhabitants of Bristlewick are not at all peaceful. Pirates, raiders, Orc Vikings, and the rising Summarrian threat have led to a hard militaristic culture. All natives of the island are required to have a lifelong militia membership, in addition to mandatory training and minimum 5 years of active service. They revere the porcupine, hedgehog, and other spiny animals as the ideal lifestyle. Take care of your own business but make sure others don't mess with you. They never colonize, never invade, have never declared war, but try to do that to them and you will have regrets.
A council of generals runs the Bristlewick government, led by the Spikelord. The Spikelord has a term of 5 years and is elected from among the generals by the entire adult population of the island, however, you get two votes if you are an active service member and ten if you are a Captain or higher. This is insurance that the country never loses the warrior way. The Spikelord also can only serve 4 terms with mandatory retirement afterward so he doesn't undermine the next Spikelord's authority. During his term though the Spikelord has almost unlimited authority to run the country as he sees fit.
The Bristlewick government gets a large portion of its revenue from hiring out companies of its military to other groups. Usually groups of 5, 4 soldiers 1 sergeant. Most are proficient in sailing and can be hired on as crew as well. After their mandatory service some will go off to join private mercenary groups as well.

Geography

This island itself is rather featureless, mostly grassy hills or farmlands with occasional patches of forest.
