Skyreach Tower
The first Dwarf Tower, built by some leader that I haven't named yet. He had a good home dug out, and a good family, but as more people gathered to join him and as he expanded, he found that the surface was too cold to maintain, and so he dug further down, to the hot stones, to channel the heat to the top. The bottom-dwellers learned magic and engineering to have the heat carry up.
And as the leader-person found that he could, he kept building up. And when he built too far up, he built further down to build further up. The area around the foundation is a series of carefully arranged tunnels from where they've spread out and gathered materials from other parts of the world, resulting in "suburbs", smaller networks and webs of tunnels that feed into the main Tower (the first incarnation of what would become a natural part of Tower development).
The stories vary (because I don't know what it is, yet), but most say that a god told him to do it in his name, as a way to preserve his memory and worship forever. The sacrifices and devotion would be good for him/her/it/them.
And so Leader Person decided to build the castle to the fucking sky. (As inspired by my game of minecraft), and he built it up and up and up. And he decided to build a garden on the roof, this magnificent thing, and it's right on the edge of the fucking atmosphere. Jumping too high results in flying off into space, regardless of the environmental bubble around the place, held by a constantly rotating shift of extremely powerful magicians.
And, one day, the bubble failed, and the garden was flash-frozen, and everything and everyone at the top fifteen stories of the tower died, frozen and suffocating.
This being the first Dwarf Tower, they inspired all the others.
