Shif

Shif are Fish-people, simply enough. They are not merfolk, those are distinctly magical, where shif are merely amphibious peoples that need to live at least part of their lives in water. They often reflect the local fish of the area, with tropical shif being much brighter (and potentially poisonous) and relatively small, and the big ones closer to the poles are bigger with duller colors.

They are bipedal, but their skin is entirely scaly, and their hands and feet are webbed. Most don't like spending time on land much at all. Their fingers are good at fine work, and they often use nets.
Their bodies feature fins on their backs, legs, and arms, and most lack a distinct chin.
This is in part because of a loose lower jaw bone that they can use to swallow food whole. (This is considered rude.)
They often make friends with Worldborn , especially the watery ones. 
They reproduce much in the ways of fish, though the shif eggs come in batches from five to ten (with extremes at three and twenty), and their children hatch in small numbers, with half of them ever developing at all. (Depending on species, they eat or discard unfertilized eggs.)

The males and females are usually not identifiable in mammal ways, which leads to landlubber confusion at times-- most think there are no females. In truth, females can be hard to spot in most species, though there are exceptions reflected in normal fish, like coloring, size differences, and shape differences.
