Here is an example of a Gap Advisory:
AMIN DUUM SEER SERVICE GAP ADVISORY:Strong long-range warning: 6 hours from Dawn Hour (D+6) Gap Time: 12:00hrs. Salenka Scale: 10;
Reality shearing: 10–15%;
Predicted toxicity max: ~450mku expected;
Shelter in place may be advised.
ADDITIONAL WARNING: Reality shearing may exceed shielding limits on the Low and Mid Spine Corridors. Access will be restricted to Gap Complex Staff only between Gap Hours 2–4 post-noon (Noon+2–4). Movement between East and West City Walls via High Spine will be restricted until Dusk+1 Bell.
The first line provides the time the tear is likely to occur. This is usually provided in both the Amin Duum-style Bell System and the more modern Gap Time. Gap Time counts the hours of the day from Midnight to Midnight and is easier to follow for new arrivals. We recommend you use this until you become familiar with the Bell System.
Warnings come in three forms:
- Long-range warnings can be multiple hours in advance, usually six or more. Forecasts of longer than a day are provided by the Seer Service but are subject to frequent change and should not be relied upon, especially if you live closer to the Gap.
- Mid-range warnings are six hours or less. These allow you to plan your day, especially if you are planning to travel closer to the Gap or are working nearby.
- Short-range warnings are less than an hour. You may be required to shelter in place if you are close to the Gap. An additional notification will be issued for those close to the Gap in the event of a short range warning with high shearing expected.
Reality Shearing Measurements
Understanding these measurements is not usually necessary for Guests and New Residents of the Exclusion Zone. However, over time it will prove useful to grasp their meaning, especially if you take a role that is affected by reality tears or you work close to the Gap.
Salenka Scale is a basic categorisation of reality tears, from 1 to 15. It was first developed by the Senior Servant of the Guardian Defender, Salenkatesh.
Reality Shearing is a percentage-based measure of the degree to which reality will be affected. Higher percentages mean reality is more unstable. Close to the Gap, this may result in short-term effects such as hallucinations and perceptual irregularities. Should you experience symptoms, you should contact your Assigned Watcher immediately.
Predicted Toxicity is a measurement of khata levels. Higher khata and khata-associated forces can cause short term ill effects, like headaches and nausea. Long-term exposure can result in severe disability or even death.
Shelter in place advisory may be issued for strong tears. If you see this, it can be helpful to find somewhere to shelter with adequate shielding in advance, especially if you know you are adversely affected by high khata levels or reality shearing.
Additional Warnings are provided where reality shearing or khata levels exceed shielding in areas close to the Gap. These are usually only for those working in the Holy Complex. These warnings include specific instructions that you may need to follow, including notifications of restricted access to throughways close to the Gap. Again, you can contact your Assigned Watcher for more support, should you need it.
