The Jam House

The Jam House is an abandoned hotel on the edge of town. It used to be a jam canning factory, making bruberry jam. However, in the 1990s as bruberries became to be on the decline on the island, the city council made a declaration forbidding the harvesting of an amount more than a bushel per person per season. This made the commercial harvesting of brueberries impossible and the factory ended up shutting down. This declaration had as much to do with the protection of bruberries as it had to do with the fact that the sickly sweet smell of bruberry jam cooking was not well tolerated by its neighbors.   The building stood abandoned for about 10 years and then a company based out of Dublin bought it and decided to turn it into an industrial design boutique hotel. They spend a fortune on converting the space into a hotel. The main factory canning room became a restaurant and an event center, while the offices and storage rooms were turned into different themed rooms. Unfortunately the conversion ended up going way over budget as everything that could go wrong did. Aspebtos in the ceiling? check. Old plumbing and electricity that had to be completely replaced? Check. Termites in the wooden beams? Check. Not to mention the fact that shipping all of the construction equipment to an island is more expensive than driving a truck. In the end they opened but didn't have the budget to do it right. They hired half the staff they should have and cut corners on the quality of things like bed sheets and ingredients for their fine dining restaurant. The place struggled along for a few years before finally closing.
