Stormbloom Thistle is a squat, broad-leafed plant with thick violet stems and a crown of deep purple petals edged in pale silver. Under calm skies it appears dull and closed, almost lifeless. When a storm approaches, the plant changes. The petals unfurl, the leaves stiffen, and fine filaments along the stem begin to crackle with visible static. During active lightning storms the thistle stands fully open, its crown faintly luminous, vibrating softly as thunder rolls overhead.
The plant grows only on exposed high ground. Wind-scoured plateaus, ridge lines, and open tundra are favoured sites. It avoids forests and sheltered valleys entirely. Experienced foragers locate Stormbloom Thistle by watching storm paths, as the plant reliably blooms hours before lightning strikes. Entire fields can remain hidden for months, then reveal themselves in a single afternoon when the sky darkens.
Several animals interact with Stormbloom Thistle despite the danger. Thunderhorn Elk are known to graze nearby but never touch the plant itself. Instead, they rub their antlers against the surrounding stones after storms, possibly absorbing residual charge. Smaller rodents avoid the area entirely during blooms. Goliath herders claim that storms strike more often where large patches grow, though whether the plant attracts lightning or merely thrives beneath it is unclear.
Beyond its primary use in storm-related rituals and brews, Stormbloom Thistle has a number of practical applications. When dried carefully, its petals retain a weak charge and are used in signal flares that ignite reliably in rain. Alchemists grind the stem fibres into powders that stabilise volatile mixtures involving metal or lightning effects. Warriors sometimes weave treated petals into banners or cloaks as a symbolic ward against fear during battle, especially in open terrain.
Harvesting is dangerous and time-sensitive. The thistle must be cut during or immediately after a storm. Too early and the petals remain inert. Too late and the charge disperses, leaving only brittle husks. Improper handling causes painful shocks and muscle spasms, though deaths are rare. Most injuries come from falls on slick stone during storms rather than from the plant itself.
