Moonlace Moss

Moonlace Moss grows only in places where ice has split under slow pressure. It clings to the narrow seams of glaciers, crevasses, and ancient ice walls, forming thin, lace-like mats that appear silvery grey by day. At night, or under starlight, the moss emits a soft blue-white glow, faint enough to miss unless one is looking directly at it. The glow is not constant. It pulses slowly, as if the moss were breathing. Finding Moonlace Moss requires patience and a careful eye. It favours north-facing ice, sheltered from direct sunlight, where meltwater seeps just enough to keep the surface damp. Experienced harvesters look for hairline cracks in blue ice or the edges of old calving scars. Disturbing the ice too roughly often kills the moss outright, turning it dull and brittle within minutes. Moonlace Moss is treated with quiet respect in the north. Those who harvest it poorly tend not to survive long enough to make the same mistake twice.
Several small ice-dwelling creatures are drawn to Moonlace Moss. Frost beetles graze on it in tiny, careful bites, and their presence is often the first sign that a patch is nearby. Shardling hunters claim that Frostfang Bears sometimes rub against moss-covered ice, possibly attracted by its warmth-regulating properties or the faint light. For this reason alone, harvesting Moonlace Moss is considered dangerous work.
Beyond its primary use in restorative brews, Moonlace Moss sees a variety of secondary applications. Alchemists grind it into powders used to stabilise volatile mixtures. Some northern cultures also burn it in small quantities during mourning rites, believing its glow guides lost spirits through darkness.
Improper use carries risks. Overconsumption causes numbness in fingers and lips, followed by disorientation. Prolonged exposure to its glow in enclosed spaces has been linked to vivid dreams and mild hallucinations, though whether this is a property of the moss or the result of isolation in icebound regions remains debated.
