Set Ashgate

Set was born into a family that worked hard, hoped harder, and still watched their luck decay piece by piece. Misfortune didn’t strike them; it settled over them, slow and suffocating. When their fortunes finally collapsed, a woman calling herself Ms. Clover appeared—smiling like someone who already knew the ending of a story no one else had read. She paid the family’s debts, filled their cupboards, and asked for only one thing in return: Set. Not as a servant, she claimed, but as an apprentice. A chance to “learn the world’s hidden rules.”
Clover gathered children from desperation and shaped them into shadows. She called them her Wards—runners, thieves, watchers. Set proved quick, clever, and curious, so she taught him Arcana as well: how to sense the pulse of magic, how to judge an item’s worth, how to know when something was better left untouched. At first, the work felt harmless. But the errands grew darker. People he followed vanished. Houses he slipped into felt wrong, as if something unseen had already passed through. Other Wards disappeared too. Clover always said they had been “taken care of,” but her voice never matched her words.
Yet Set’s life wasn’t only shadows. During a rare moment of freedom, he wandered too far from the city and into the Corelleon Forest outside Neuvoterre, the elven city. There, wounded from a botched job and half-delirious, he collapsed beneath ancient boughs. He woke to the soft voice of a half‑elf woman named Kya.
She lived in a small woodland village hidden beneath the canopy, a place untouched by Clover’s reach. Kya tended his wounds, fed him, and—most dangerously—treated him with a kindness he had never been taught to expect. Set returned to her whenever he could steal a few days away. In her presence, the world felt wider, gentler. He fell in love quietly, then completely. He began to imagine a life beyond Clover’s grasp.
Then came the rooftop betrayal. A trusted crewmate turned on him—steel flashing, pain exploding across his right eye, the shove sending him plummeting into darkness. He remembers the fall. The wind. The certainty of death.
  And then nothing.
He awoke days later under Clover’s care, his right eye replaced with something she called a gift. A Hag Eye—though she never named it. She only said he was “lucky,” and that he owed her more than ever.
Set didn’t believe her. Not anymore.
With his memories fractured and his trust shattered, he fled the first chance he got. And he ran not to safety, but to Kya. She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t question. She simply took his hand. Together, they vanished into the world.
Now Set lives in the Amaranthe Animus Aviary, where he helps where he can fixing things and ensuring the safety of the only thing that brings him joy, Kya. But he never truly relaxes. Clover’s shadow stretches long, and the Hag Eye in his skull feels like a door someone else might open at any moment. He keeps Kya close. He keeps his crossbows closer. And every time the wind shifts behind him, he wonders if Clover has finally come to reclaim what she believes is hers.
