Magic Levels
A table descriptor to identify magic/tech level. This is to indicate the level of magic in a given society. Individuals can vary. Different cultures can have opposing and parallel descriptors:
- e.g. In Harry Potter, two cultures side by side, one clearly ubiquitous and one is either perceived/incidental.
| AGE | DESCRIPTION |
|---|---|
| None | For whatever reason this culture has no access to or belief in magic. |
| Perceived | This culture believes in magic (to one degree or another) but the practice is false. |
| Incidental | This culture doesn't actively use magic but it takes advantage of magic from other sources (natural, pre-existing, etc). |
| Miraculous | Magic comes in bursts from a higher power or regular source. No power stored or summoned. |
| Shamanic | Magic held by a few and used in a ritual way. |
| Academic | Magic is studied, magic stored and summoned, may still be unreliable. Has not replaced technology. |
| Scientific | Study common, understanding broad, research into artefacts and long term self sustaining spells begins. |
| Ubiquitous | Advanced magic is so common in society that almost all people have access to it innately or through items. Sentient spells and reliable artefacts. |
| Master | Universal mastery of high magic. magic spells may have replaced many citizens, casual extra-planar travel happens. Some citizens interact with higher beings regularly. |
| Impossible | Average people have the ability to wholly alter reality, nearly unlimited capacity to create and destroy, see and travel to other dimensions, and pit themselves against god-like beings. (any civilization that gets close is usually destroyed by itself or by the Elder Gods) |
