Qualifications
A professor is hired for their deep knowledge in a particular topic to teach others the skills of that knowledge and to conduct research on that knowledge to further their own understanding of the topic.
Career Progression
Most professors start as an associate professor that are an assistant to another professor with more tenure in their position. This allows them to gain experience in teaching as well as research projects. Associate professors that demonstrate their skills and knowledge move on to being full professors with further respect given to those of longer tenure. A dean is selected among the professors to be a department head of a field of study in a school.
Payment & Reimbursement
In a hold over from the mage college days for Radera room and board are provided for professors to encourage them to be on campus more and closer to their studies. A stipend is paid as well which helps fuel costs for personal projects outside of the university.
Other Benefits
Along with the financial and lodging professors gain benefits of being closer with the colleagues for collaboration as well as fresh access to new and upcoming minds in their fields to tap to assist with field of study research. They also have access to collegiate finding before it is published to the public. That said all of the projects conducted at school must report publically their findings. If research is required to be more private then it would need to be conducted off campus and using personal resources.

Purpose
Education saw an uptick after the sundering of the world. At that time the mage's college opened up aetheric study to more students and even those that couldn't directly channel aether. This saw the profession widing to general topics outside of magical research such as the arts and general education to be offered.
