VEL-ASH-KHAR-SKAR
The Noble Levels · The Upper Terraces · Vel-Ash Household and Senior Guilds · Varakh-Vel
“Thane Bera describes Varakh's noble levels as more practically arranged than Thalgrimm's and less ornamental than Karneth's. I asked which of the three she found most comfortable to inhabit. She said she found Varakh the most instructive. I note that instructive and comfortable are different things and that she chose the word deliberately.”
The noble levels occupy the upper terraces below the Thane's Tier, shaped by eleven centuries of Vel-Ash household expansion and the hold's commercial orientation. The gem-garden formations are well-maintained but utilitarian in their cultivation design, reflecting the Vel-Ash aesthetic that has consistently chosen precision over elaboration across eleven generations of Thanes. The senior craftwork guild residences on the lower noble terraces blur the caste boundary between noble and craft in a way characteristic of Varakh's commercial character.
Demographics
The Vel-Ash household's extended family occupies the upper noble terraces. Below them, the senior bloodlines whose positions reflect eleven centuries of commercial success. The senior craftwork guild masters have a social standing closer to the noble caste here than at any other hold, occupying the lower noble terraces in a configuration that has been formalised over centuries into an accepted social arrangement. The intelligence advisory staff who support Gorund's western intelligence operation live here rather than at the tier above, their residential proximity to the commercial common levels below reflecting the informational flow they manage.
Points of interest
The Vel-Ash household library occupies a suite of chambers on the second noble terrace -- eleven centuries of collected knowledge about the western political situation, crossing the boundary between library and intelligence archive. The holdings include orc clan genealogical records assembled through trade post observation, Roman military survey maps acquired through the commercial relationship, giant territorial charts compiled from the cave surveillance network's output, and Gorund's personal annotated collection of Roman scholarly works on the western frontier. Three of Varro's monographs are in the collection. Two have marginal annotations Varro would very much like to read.
Architecture
The same accumulated quality as Thalgrimm's noble levels, but with different decorative priorities. The rune-walls carry the complete Vel-Ash dynastic record in rigorously current inscription. The gem-garden formations are precise and well-cultivated without elaboration -- functional beauty rather than decorative display. The senior craftwork guild premises on the lower terraces are adjacent to the residential chambers in a physical arrangement that reflects the social reality: at Varakh, the boundary between noble household and senior craft operation is deliberately permeable.
Geography
Six tiers below the Thane's Tier, the noble terraces are proportionally wider for the hold's size than at Thalgrimm, reflecting a noble population large relative to the hold's total. The commercial wealth generated by eleven centuries of trade post operation has expanded the noble caste in ways that the older, more governance-oriented holds have not experienced to the same degree.
