The saga of the southern expansion is told, in the Joturvolk tradition, as a myth about stopping. Not about going — any people can go. About stopping at the right moment and holding the position. The Frost Jarl of the Bellum Glaciale is remembered not for how far south she drove but for where she stood. This is the Joturvolk’s highest praise.

II. ÞÆ GRJOT GROUNDS — THE STONE GROUNDS
(All voices, building. The chant rises.)
Jærl fór. Stríkar fór. Hrafnar fór. Allir fór.
The Jarl went. The warriors went. The ravens went. All went.
Fjæll lókast á bak. Grjót opnast fram.
The mountains closed behind. The stone opened ahead.
Jærl stóð á grjót-grund. Jærl sá þæ skógr-bryn.
The Jarl stood on the stone ground. The Jarl saw the forest edge.
III. ÞÆ STANDA — THE STANDING
(Voices drop. The saga-keeper alone carries the Jarl’s words.)
Jærl hlustarddi. Skógr hlustarddi aptr.
The Jarl listened. The forest listened back.
Ekki stríkar. Ekki geirr. Ekki eldur. Einungis auglitð.
No warriors. No spear. No fire. Only attention.
Jærl þækkt þætta. Jærl sneri aptr.

The Ganga ok Standa is performed at two occasions in the Joturvolk saga tradition: when a new Frost Jarl takes the seat, and when a decision of military significance is under consideration. The four-word central statement — Eigi er hennar, it is not ours — is the most frequently cited line in the accessible portions of the Verdrsplit cycle. Every Frost Jarl since the Bellum Glaciale has been required to demonstrate that they understand what it means before the seat is confirmed. What constitutes demonstration is not recorded in any document I have been permitted to read.
