DOMUS ADMIRALIS

The Admiral’s Residence  ·  Residence / Social Centre  ·  Officers’ Quarter, Portus Lacus

"The intelligence assessments discussed at the officers’ gatherings here are technically the most rigorous available in the interior provinces’ social environment and operationally incomplete in the specific way that Mira Wavesong described as becoming dangerous. I have observed this directly, not because I attended — I have not — but because the officers who have attended and then spoken to me describe the briefings with a confidence that I recognise as the confidence of people who believe their information is complete. The gap between what they know and what is known about their sea lanes is not visible to them because it has always been filled from outside."
— G.C.P.S.A., Descriptio Aethermarchae, 1197 A.P.

The Domus Admiralis is the Officers’ Quarter’s social and institutional centre: the Admiral’s official residence and the venue for the formal dinners and informal officers’ gatherings that constitute the Classis’s social life outside the operational environment. The building sits at the quarter’s highest point, its upper floor windows providing the most complete view of the fleet’s harbour position available from any residential building in the settlement. Nauta Fortis uses this view as a daily operational check and uses the residence’s formal dining room as the venue for the briefings he gives to visiting Senate officials — briefings designed to leave visitors with a higher assessment of the Classis’s importance than they arrived with.

The Domus is where the Classis’s institutional confidence is most concentrated and most visible. The officers who gather here discuss the fleet’s operational state with the specific analytical precision of people who have been trained to turn observation into operational decision, and their analyses are the most rigorous intelligence assessment of the Inland Sea’s security available in the settlement’s social environment. They are also thirty percent incomplete, and the incompleteness is invisible in the social context because everyone in the room shares the same gap.

Design

The quarter’s largest residence: two storeys of the dark northern stone, a garden that is modest by the Merchant Villas District’s standards and substantial by the Officers’ Quarter’s, upper floor windows with the harbour view that Nauta Fortis checks each morning. The formal dining room accommodates twenty-four, the informal gathering space on the ground floor thirty. The study on the upper floor’s eastern end is where the Admiral prepares his Magister Militum reports and where the proposed northern sea lane extension proposal is currently in draft.

Denizens

Admiral Marcus Nauta Fortis when in residence. The Domus’s social events bring together the fleet’s senior officers in the most candid context available — the operational assessments shared here are the officers’ genuine views rather than formal briefing positions. Players who can attend — which requires either official status, a Senate introduction, or Nauta Fortis’s personal invitation — will observe the Classis’s institutional picture at its most complete and most incomplete simultaneously.
