Mana Overload

Dunamorrhagia

Dunamorrhagia, typically known as Mana Overload, is a serious condition of the Mana System where too much Mana, be that purified, impure, or both, flows through the Mana System. It is usually caused by extreme circumstances originating from outside the Mana System, and if not immediately treated or controlled can cause severe long term damage to not just the Mana System, but the physical body as well. Mana Overload is one of the most dangerous conditions that a spellcaster, particularly a Witch, can suffer from, as it has the capability of causing Pandunamic Escharia, a full-system Mana Burn that ultimately leads to permanent conditions such as Dunamivasosclerosis (Mana Vessel Scarring) and Vesicasclerosis (Pool Scarring).

Mana Overload typically involves the Mana Pool drawing excessive amounts of Mana through itself, then not being able to properly force the Mana out due to the lack of proper activation of the Weave Channel. This process results in a combination of Hyperdunamia (Mana Excess), Vesical Distension (Mana Bloat), Dunamostaxis (Mana Leakage), and Dunapyliparesis (Dunathric Sphincter Weakness), which together create a cascade effect within the Mana System that causes Mana to burst out of it in unnatural and dangerous ways.

While typically rare, Mana Overload is significantly more likely to occur within Witches, young or infirm spellcasters, and those who are already Dunamically compromised. Mana Overload is considered one of the most serious Dunamic conditions as it can be fatal if left unchecked. Experiencing Mana Overload when alone is a terrifying experience, and many adventuring spellcasters will carry some form of Complete Occlusive with them in case an Overload occurs.

Causes

Mana Overload is generally caused by external influence on the Mana System, such as Dunamic Hijacking, Dunamic Anomalies, or Possession/Domination by an external force.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Mana Overload include convulsions, vomiting blood and Matter-Necrotised Mana, a sense of pressure or bloating throughout the body, burning sensations throughout the body, extreme headaches, and general pain. Other symptoms can include muscle weakness, bleeding from the nose, eyes, and ears, Errant Mana Discharge, loss of consciousness, and seizures.

These symptoms arise and worsen very quickly, often within seconds of the inciting event.

Treatment

Mana Overload must be treated immediately with Complete Occlusives or Dunamostatics, or through the controlled release of Mana through the Weave Channel to release the pressure building up within the Mana System. While the controlled release of Mana is preferred as it results in fewer lasting complications, it is not always possible if the sufferer is a Witch, too young to properly control their Mana, has lost control of their Mana System, or is otherwise impaired.

A preferred option amongst Witches for a Complete Occlusive is Scheras Root, which contains a liquid that can temporarily stop the flow of magic via paralysis of the Dunathric Sphincters, while the root flesh disperses Mana completely for a short time. However, Scheras Root is difficult to grow and cultivate outside of select locations within the north of Eirinn and Duraloth, thus can be expensive to procure.

Prognosis

If treated promptly upon symptoms surfacing, Mana Overload fades relatively quickly, though the side effects of the treatment method may remain.

Untreated, Mana Overload can result in significant damage to the Mana System, typically through Mana Scarring and Sphinctal Paralysis. In worst-case scenarios, death can occur due to the heavy trauma inflicted upon the body.

Sequela

Treatment of Mana Overload typically results in temporary Mana Cessation or other Mana-Inhibiting Condition. These conditions are expected and required for the Mana System to make a complete recovery.

Untreated Mana Overload can result in Mana Scarring conditions, as well as Dunaminecrosis (Mana Rot), Pandunamangiolysis (Complete Mana Breakdown), or even Dunamicide (Mana Death) in the most severe of cases.
