Mana-Induced Asthenia

Dunamic Asthenia

Officially known as Dunamic Asthenia and also known in Common as Mana-Induced Physical Weakness or MIPW, Mana-Induced Asthenia (MIA) is a physical condition caused by magic, and is thus recognised as a Magical Disease or Condition. Like it's purely physical counterpart (asthenia), MIA can be a harmless and normal effect from magic-related over-exertion, or it can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition. Identifying MIA is particularly tricky because it features similar symptoms to asthenia, as well as other physical conditions such as fatigue and paresis.

Unlike regular asthenia, MIA is typically caused by Mana-related conditions, such as overexertion or injuries of the Mana System, System disruptions or conditions, or as the result of magical spells or status effects. These conditions then overflow into the physical system, causing the spellcaster's body to experience asthenia symptoms even if they have not engaged in physical activity or are otherwise physically healthy.

Much of the time, MIA is simply a sign that spellcasters need to take some time to slow down and rest from spellcasting. However, it can also be a warning sign of a more serious issue, thus chronic episodes of MIA should be discussed with a Medical Dunamic Specialist.

Causes

MIA is typically caused by magical overexertion or injury, by Mana System disruptions or conditions, or as the result of magical spells or status effects caused by spells. The use of or exposure to magic is critical in the development of MIA; if the symptoms present without the direct involvement of Mana or magic, then the condition is not in fact MIA.

Symptoms

Similarly to regular asthenia, MIA presents as a lack of physical, emotional, or cognitive tiredness that interferes with day-to-day functioning. The symptoms of MIA are highly disproportionate to the amount of physical activity being performed, often accompanied by a mild tingling sensation in the fingertips like a mild pins and needles, which is typically what identifies MIA as opposed to typical asthenia. MIA is often regional, targeting the arms and neck, though can affect the whole body, resulting in difficulty carrying out daily tasks.

Treatment

Treatment for MIA depends on the underlying cause.

In cases of acute MIA caused by Mana System disruptions or conditions, treatment typically focuses on correcting the disruption or condition itself.

MIA that arises as the result of magical spells or status effects is often treated with further magical intervention, such as Cure Wounds, Restoration, or Dispersal spells.

Where magical overexertion has occurred, rest and recuperation is typically prescribed, alongside abstinence from spellcasting.

Prognosis

MIA is, in and of itself, non-fatal and is usually a sign of some other condition or affect being at work upon the body.

Prevention

Some causes of MIA are preventable, but many happen unpredictably and therefore cannot be fully controlled. Not overdoing strenuous spellcasting and the use of protective and safety gear can help to reduce the risk of spellcasting and magical-affect related MIA. However, the prevention of MIA resulting from other medical conditions is mostly reduced to management of known Dunamic medical conditions, and does not fully prevent MIA from arising.
