Almirasensitiser Hypersensitivity

Almirasensitiser Hypersensitivity, also known as Almiraj Poisoning or Almiraj Allergy, is not technically a poisoning condition, but rather an exaggerated immune response (allergy) that can lead to anaphylaxis in Dragons and Dragon-Kin. The sugary substance within an Almiraj's horn is toxic to those of Draconic origin, despite being used as a sweetener in drinks and desserts for all other species. Kobolds typically suffer milder symptoms of Almiraj Poisoning than other types of Dragon-Kin, and it is believed that this is because of their unusual genetic mix of both draconic and mammalian origins.

Symptoms of Almiraj Poisoning typically begin immediately after exposure, with topical contact resulting in burns, blistering, and welts on skin and scales, and ingestion or injection seeing swelling, blistering, rashes, dyspnoea, wheezing, itching, pain, and vomiting. Severe reactions or high level exposure can result in anaphylaxis, which can lead to death.

All Dragon-Kin are susceptible to Almiraj Poisoning, therefore it is considered a Common condition amongst those species. However, it is highly specific to Dragon-Kin and does not affect other Species.

Causes

Almiraj Poisoning is caused by a genetic immune response to the sugary substance known as Almirasap, found within the horn of the Almiraj. This "sap" is what gives the Almiraj its epithet of "Dragon Killer", as all Dragon-Kin are known to be allergic to this substance.

Symptoms

Topical contact by a Dragon-Kin with Almirasap typically results in immediate burning, blistering, and welts upon the skin and scales. The affected areas are typically incredibly itchy and can result in lesions and secondary infections.

Internal administration of Almirasap via injection or ingestion result in swelling across various parts of the body, skin/scale blistering, rashes, dyspnoea, heavy wheezing, itching, pain, and vomiting. Severe reactions or high level exposure can result in anaphylaxis, with the sufferer displaying difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, feeling tired or confused, dizziness, and discolouration around the mouth and nose areas.

Treatment

Almiraj Poisoning generally requires treatment with an Almirajic Antihistamine, though mild attacks are sometimes left to resolve themselves, particularly among Kobolds. External symptoms can be managed with anti-itching creams, salves and ointments, as well as pain medication.

Severe reactions require the administration of Almirajic Epinephrine-based potions or injections, and sometimes magical intervention.

Prognosis

While typically non-fatal, those with known severe allergies must be incredibly careful and seek medical aid immediately upon symptoms developing, as anaphylaxis can result in death.

Affected Groups

Only Dragon-Kin are affected by Almiraj Poisoning, including Dragons, Fisdragua, and Kobolds.
