Chaos UNO

Chaos UNO is a fun game for families, friends and any other groups that want to spend some time, but don't just want to play regular UNO. Its primary downside is that it requires an actual set of enchanted Chaos UNO cards, which aren't available everywhere, but luckily aren't too expensive.

Rules

The game starts with the same rules as regular UNO. Which means that any family or group can play it however they do, just with these special cards. What the cards really add is a few things, that don't affect the rules in way that are predicable. This makes each play with these cards, and often even each different deck completely unpredictable. Anything less would be strange for its name.

  • At its simplest the deck adds sound effects and colorful visual effects when playing certain cards. These effects are mostly there to make special cards hit harder and are adjusted for the group playing.
  • The second possible effect is that cards can change themselves. People have a lot of theories on what to do to get them to change to specific card, but there really is just chaos. Sometimes it will become a winning card, and sometimes it will stop the winning move, and sometimes it doesn't seem to matter at all.
  • The third possible effect is the introduction of entirely different new cards. This could be something simple as just a new number (even something like 3.5) or a slightly alternate special card. On example could be that a choose color card only has three colors instead of all for. More special cards can be added to the deck that introduce new rules. These new rules are explained by the card when it is played by someone. While holding it in the hand the player is completely unaware of what will happen. These special rules can for example be that while red is on the play staple, nobody is allowed to laugh. Anyone who breaks the rule has to pick up an extra card. The deck of course does not enforce these rules, but may remind the players on occasion.
  • The fourth effect is not in the game itself, but instead if you pull out the deck by yourself, feeling lonely, the game will provide other players for you as you hand out the cards. These players aren't summoned creatures or in some way created, but instead come from a pool of people ready to jump into a game as a projection. The people being summoned bring a lot of chaos as it can really be anyone. The summoning itself works consistently.
  • The fifth and final effect is one that is very rare, and most players doubt that it is actually real. The deck may on occasion hand out real physical awards to the winners of a round. In every case it is something deeply meaningful to the winner or something very helpful to the players situation. Examples includes hints to how resolve a problem that troubles their life, a memento they believed to be lost, a charm that helps them in a tricky situation in the future and many different things. It is never just something that represents material wealth.

Origin

Chaos UNO was first created by Adla Selemani in the year 1995. She created a prototype deck as her final project for her degree in Advanced Enchantments at the Mythical Artifice and Enchantment Institute of the University in Dar es Salaam. She originally started working on it to play the game with her siblings and the later friends. It started out as really just a regular UNO game with a few cards that had caused visual and audio effects when played. Over time she kept tinkering and expanding the deck, incorporating all her knowledge about enchanting into it. This card set is still in her possession and she keeps working on it even over twenty years later.

Copyright Conflict

As the rights to the UNO is attributed to some company that doesn't like sharing, the people who decide to just distribute Chaos UNO under a new name when the The Veil fell. Before that it was no problem, since the relevant lawyers just had no idea what was going on. The new name is barely known, as with magic the game changes back to Chaos UNO once it is purchased and everyone realizes what it is when they see the the product they are buying, forgetting what its cover name is.

Global Distribution

The game is today distributed by a company owned by the ancient deity of chaos Yam. This company produces all the stock in a factory in an unknown location and sells the decks way below a price anyone else could match. Economists suspect that the deck is sold likely sold at a loss. They are also shipping to all countries in the world, even including North Korea, at not extra cost. When asked about it, Yam just said that they simply want to spread some mostly harmless chaos into the world.

This is cool! I'd love a real one. It does sound like a "magical app" that you'd have on your magikphone!

Now this, my family would play. I love the copyright workaround, too.

The copyright section made me laugh out loud. I played a bunch of regular UNO recently, so I'd love to give this variation a try.
