Keeper's Badge

The Badge of the Keepers bears the full authority of the organization it represents. It opens doors, and sets the tone of any conversation where it's on display.   When someone is chosen to take the "Trial of the 10" they are given a badge which binds to that person on a level beyond attunement, it will be theirs until their vow is broken whether by deed or death.   A Keeper's Badge is a disk approximately 100mm/4in in diameter so it fits comfortably in the average hand when they need to flash it. They each bear the insignia of the Keepers but its exact appearance depends on the rank of the Keeper it is bound to. The Badge of a Keeper once bound to a recruit can potentially go through 5 stages of evolution should they prove themselves worthy of promotion within the organization. Each evolution is triggered by a unique alchemical reaction embedded in the badge itself which is activated by a command phrase and physical contact with a higher ranked badge as a catalyst.   The default appearance of a badge bound or unbound is the Recruit's Badge, a brass badge bearing the clasped hands of the Keepers' insignia but lacks the binding chains. Upon passing the trial and taking their vow a recruit's badge will be promoted to Keeper, a lead badge of clasped hands bound with gold chains the lead signifying the heavy burden that comes with their vow. A Candidate Keeper bears a gold badge with platinum chains, signifying the value of the empire and the precious nature of their vow to maintain it. A Field Keeper being the highest rank of keeper that travels the kingdoms carries a Platinum Badge with Mithral Chains signifying how precious the empire is to them and how light the burden of their vow has become. True Keepers who mainly operate out of headquarters in Marcelheim have a Mithral Badge with bound in Adamantine Chains, intended to signify how easily they shoulder the burden of the Empire's peace and how their vow is unbreakable. The highest ranking keepers, the Grandmasters, have an Adamantine Badge with Adamantine Chains signifying the fact that under their supervision the empire itself is unbreakable, their vow distilled to its purest form.   The badge isn't just a simple symbol of their authority, each evolution of a badge unlocks a variety of abilities intended to aid the Keeper in their duties. Recruit and Keeper badges have two abilities "Keeper's Reprieve" which is a one time use casting of Revivify which doesn't require the material component and "Keeper's Retribution" which shocks anyone who attempts to exercise the authority of a badge that isn't bound to them dealing lightning damage scaling with the rank of the badge they're abusing. Candidate Keepers gain "Keeper's Report" a 'sonar ping' style variation of the spell "locate object". Keeper's Report pings out for all Keeper's Badges in a 2000 foot range and gives the user the rank, direction and distance for each badge it finds. Field Keepers have access to "Keeper's Rally", all badge bearers in range of their Keeper's Report hear a bugle call type alert in their minds and are drawn to the location of the Field Keeper who triggered it, a distress call of a sorts.   The abilities of the True Keeper and Grandmaster Badges are well kept secrets but are speculated to be of substantial magical power.

Significance

The most valuable item a Keeper will ever own is their badge, all of the fringe benefits it bestows aside, it is the physical embodiment of the vow they've taken. Nothing could be more precious to them.

As rare as the Keepers who they are bound to, badges are carefully controlled and protected. Issues like attempts to counterfeit or steal badges are prevented through a variety of magical enchantments but when attempts are made they are dealt with swiftly and without mercy.
