Islanders

Intrepid explorers, slippery outlaws, and traders of the sky islands.

The folks who live exclusively up on floating islands are known as the islanders. They're a mixed bunch of traders, outlaws, and explorers that occupy different regions - some remain stationary on islands that are tethered to the land by huge chains, whilst others prefer to see where the wind carries them.
Regardless of their backgrounds, it's a challenging lifestyle! Islanders have to be adaptable to their environments and be resourceful with the limited food and water they can sustain on what is essentially a giant floating hill with an albar rock core that keeps it aloft.
Many islanders practise the ways of heat magic and cold magic to make small adjustments to the height of their island. The smaller isles are easier to manage with small communities of magicians but the largest islands, such as Academy Island, take significant effort and coordination to control and are usually anchored instead.

Traders

Merchants and traders run a tight business running supplies from the ground to the skies using massive airships with carefully balanced loads.
Preserved food, fresh water, and building materials are always in high demand, as are alpine plants and shrubs that can survive the cold of higher altitudes because their roots help to retain the limited soil structure some islands have.

Outlaws

Some islanders are outlaws, either escaping a life of crime to continue it above or those that have been banished to the sky as a form of punishment. Some countries have a dedicated sky prison for containing their most dangerous criminals.

Explorers

Many of the islanders of the world are just explorers with an excitement to see new lands, different cultures, and new species.
Many scholars and magicians hitch a ride on migrating islands to travel to acclimatise in new regions and adapt their environmental forms of magic.
